What is the story behind the name Poppy Barley?

Last Updated: Feb 12, 2015 04:38PM MST
During the Middle Ages in England, when every village had a shoemaker and all shoes were made just for you, cobblers used poppy seeds and barleycorns as the unit of measure. One barleycorn was equal to 1/3 inch and four poppy seeds equalled barleycorn. Even today, barleycorns and poppy seeds are the basis of UK and US shoe sizing.
